In a landmark collaboration set to redefine the landscape of inclusive sports in the Philippines, Special Olympics Pilipinas (SOP) and the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) are proud to announce the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA). This strategic alliance aims to mutually contribute and advance all aspects related to inclusive basketball, fostering a more inclusive and accessible sporting environment for individuals of all abilities.

The signing ceremony took place amidst the electrifying atmosphere of the FIBA Asia Cup 2025 Qualifiers at the Philsports Arena, Pasig City. The MoA was signed by Akiko Thomson-Guevara, Chairperson and National President of Special Olympics Pilipinas, and Alfredo S. Panlilio, President of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas.

Under this groundbreaking partnership, SOP and SBP pledge to promote, develop, and administer inclusive basketball programs nationwide. Both organizations are committed to educating, training, and encouraging members in the game of inclusive basketball, exemplifying the spirit of unity and teamwork.

Moreover, the agreement will enhance opportunities for player, coach, and referee development, ensuring that individuals from diverse backgrounds have the chance to excel in the sport. By harnessing the power of basketball, SOP and SBP aim to empower athletes with intellectual disabilities and promote social inclusion on and off the court.

This historic collaboration is the result of localizing the global partnership between Special Olympics International and the Federation Internationale de Basketball (FIBA) signed on September 2023 here in Manila. Through synergistic efforts, SOP and SBP are poised to elevate the profile of inclusive sports in the Philippines and set new benchmarks for excellence and inclusivity in basketball.

In conjunction with this partnership, SOP and SBP will launch an extensive grassroots basketball program across the country, targeting communities of all sizes and demographics. By bringing the joy of basketball to every corner of the nation, this initiative will act as a catalyst for positive social change and foster a culture of acceptance and belonging.
