Indonesia overcomes Gilas Women’s strong start

Gilas Pilipinas Women dropped their first game in the women’s 5×5 basketball tournament of the 32nd Southeast Asian Games, losing to 2022 silver medalists, Indonesia, 89-68, Friday in Cambodia.

Gilas started out the game strong. Chack Cabinbin and Clare Castro teamed up to push the team to an early lead. They were joined in the scoring column by Ella Fajardo, Khate Castillo, and Angel Surada who helped push the lead to as much as seven points before settling for a six-point advantage after the first period.

Indonesia cut Gilas’ lead down to just two points heading into the half. The Indonesians then went on a 9-0 run to take over the game and built a 14-point advantage heading into the final period.

Gilas put up a gallant stand to start the fourth. Cabinbin, Surada, and Jack Animam scored on consecutive baskets to keep the Philippines within striking distance. The Indonesians eventually pulled away for good midway through the fourth.

Janine Pontejos led the team in scoring with 11 points while Cabinbin notched 10. Fajardo and Surada combined for 15 points.

Gilas is now 2-1 in the tournament. Their next assignment is Vietnam, on May 13, 12:00 PM Philippine time.
