
The SBP was founded, succeeding the Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP) as the country's national basketball federation.

Philippine Basketball was thereafter reinstated as a member of the Federacion Internationale Basketball Association (FIBA), with full rights to participate in international basketball after more than two years of suspension.
This office, built by the first President of SBP, Manuel V. Pangilinan is dedicated to all Filipinos with the love and passion for basketball. It stands as a strong symbol of commitment to bring Philippine Basketball to a higher path, illuminated by the eternal principle of unity and focused on grass roots development and international excellence. “

On January 29, 2024, the SBP was honored as the National Sports Association of the Year at the San Miguel Corporation–Philippine Sportswriters Association Annual Awards Night. This accolade recognized SBP’s significant contributions, including its leadership in co-hosting the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 and its connection to Gilas Pilipinas’ historic achievements, such as the gold medal performance in the Asian Games.

In 2024, in collaboration with DDB Group Philippines, SBP received a Stevie® Award, underscoring its excellence in the organization and promotion of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023. This recognition highlights SBP’s expertise in event management on an international platform.
