Korea defeats Gilas Men in first friendly

Gilas Pilipinas Men lost to Korea, 96-92, in the first of two friendlies at the KB Kookmin Bank Invitational on Friday.

Kiefer Ravena scored 22 points, including four 3s, to lead the Philippine squad. Dwight Ramos had 16, while Rhenz Abando and Carl Tamayo each contributed 11.

Gilas Men were up 55-45 at halftime but the Korean national team turned the tables around with a 23-3 run in the second half.

The Koreans built a 17-point lead but the Philippines managed to cut the deficit to five, 87-82, with less than two minutes remaining after a layup from SJ Belangel and a 3-point play from Dwight Ramos.

Gilas Men came within four with 10.7 seconds left but their comeback fell short as Korea held on for the win.

The Philippines hopes to bounce back when it plays another friendly with Korea on Saturday.

The two games are part of the men’s national team’s preparations for the third window of the FIBA World Cup 2023 Asian Qualifiers.
